Invitation to a banquet shown in American Standard Version

Invitation to a banquet

Here we are given the analogy of a rich man who prepares and feast, invites all his friends, then finds out that everyone’s giving silly excuses to not come.

Everyone suddenly starts coming up with excuses to not show, and you wonder why nobody wants to. How would you feel? Annoyed? Upset?

Now imagine that Jesus invites you to come to Him. What would be your reaction? Perhaps going to church now and then might not be such a bad thing. But walking with Jesus? What if people see me next to Him? They might think “now he’s gone and lost it”, or “that’s just too much, too religious!” Are we proud of Jesus as a friend, or are we too ashamed to be with Him, and end up giving excuses for this not to happen?

What does Jesus do then? He invites people who originally weren’t invited, people who are just as important and loved by Him. He doesn’t force anyone to come – anyone can take or reject His offer. This parable was brought about to explain why Christianity spread from being exclusively Jewish, to be available to the rest of the world. The Jews were God’s chosen people, the ones who had the privilege of knowing God and having His blessing. Yet they did not appreciate it, and chose time and again to worship other gods. Jesus then prepared a feast – He died on the cross, and opened up His invitation to salvation to the rest of the world.
