This parable describes how the Word of God produces its fruit.

Mk 4:26-29

26 And he said, So is the kingdom of God, as if a man should cast seed upon the earth;

27 and should sleep and rise night and day, and the seed should spring up and grow, he knoweth not how.

28 The earth beareth fruit of herself; first the blade, then the ear, then the full grain in the ear.

29 But when the fruit is ripe, straightway he putteth forth the sickle, because the harvest is come.

V 27: The Word of God is unpredictable, and uncontrollable. Like the seed, how its roots grow and the leaves unfurl are mysteries, things that are hidden from the eyes of man. Likewise, the Word of God roots itself in the soul in different ways. Invisible to the eyes of man, only God alone is understand the process, and see its influence on the heart and mind of the recipient. The process is gradual and progressive.

The purpose of planting the seed was for it to reach maturity. In the meanwhile, sunshine, rain and dew – God’s blessings and grace – were showered on the seed. The mature Christian, having fulfilled his mission, can now anticipate a home in glory, as God gathers the mature grains to Himself.
