The unfruitful fig tree shown in American Standard Version

The unfruitful fig tree

What use is a tree which does not produce any fruit? A fig tree that is barren becomes a huge drain of resources for the caretaker. Don’t be lacking in the humility to produce good fruit!

The fig tree in this parable refers to Israel, and the keeper of the vineyard is Jesus. The three years of barrenness show that sufficient time has passed for Israel to bear fruit. God commanded that the fig tree be cut down, demonstrating His terrifying love and judgment. But here also is the Son of God, Jesus who pleaded on our behalf, and has undertaken this heavy responsibility and has sacrificed himself for all of our sin. This terrible judgment and awesome forgiveness is a demonstration of God’s love for us!

Lk 13:6-9
